Summer Pool Safety Tips

Summer Pool Safety Tips
For many families, summer means hanging out in and around the pool. Outdoor activities are wonderful for bringing families together. However, pools, spas and other bodies of water present several dangers. We live in a world surrounded by water. Even if you don’t live near the ocean, many neighborhoods and developments have water runoff ponds, streams and community pools. As a homeowner with a personal pool, you need to be responsible for the safety of everyone using the pool or backyard area. By taking a few safety precautions, the risk of drowning is greatly reduced.

Opening and Maintaining the Pool

When a pool has been closed for the winter, opening it is the time to check for any needed repairs. For lined pools, check for any tears that have developed. All of the equipment, pump, water skimmer and hoses, need to be examined for signs of deterioration or damage. If you have an above-ground pool, the structure itself needs to be examined for signs of rust or weakening. Examine any decking and handrails for necessary repairs. There may be rotting wood or protruding nails that could hurt someone. When the pool is ready to use, make sure that no one brings glass bottles into the area and that all pool chemicals are safely and securely stored.

Storing Supplies

In addition to keeping pool chemicals secure, pool toys need to be safely stored when not in use. Some families institute a one toy at a time policy to keep everyone safe. This creates a safer environment when several people are swimming in the pool at the same time.

Essential Pool Safety Tips

If your family includes children, install secure fencing around the pool to limit their access. These gates can be secured with an audible alarm that will alert you when someone enters the pool area. Temporary fencing can also be used in the pool to prevent kids from entering deeper water. These can be removed when needed. At all times, children need to be supervised while in the water. Developing a “buddy system” ensures that there is someone at arm’s length should there be a problem. If the pool is deep enough, restrict diving to that area for more experienced swimmers. In case of an emergency, make sure that life-saving tools are located in the area. This can include life preservers/rings and a rope. Lastly, one of the most important tips is to enroll your child in swimming classes. This will help them with muscular control and coordination. They will learn breathing skills and how to roll over in the water. Swim classes also teach important water safety skills.
